Field Trips to Golden Rule Bindery
Jerry is demonstrating how the chopping machine is used to remove spines from old books so they can be rebound.
Each book is checked by the Collating Department in order to make sure all unsafe items have been removed (i.e., staples, paperclips, foam, cotton balls, etc.).
Students look on as they learn about sewing books with an Oversew Machine.
Students watch closely as they are shown each step the book is carefully put through.
Here the students learn about "end sheets", which are the sheets attached at the front and back of book.
Materials for rebinding are customized for each book. In this picture, the heavy board is cut down to size in order to create the "hard" part of the cover.
Each student is allowed to choose the color for the buckram cloth cover on their student project book.
The title and author is entered into the computer for use in the hot foil stamping machine.
Any Questions? There always are! We enjoy teaching young students about the book binding process; it creates new appreciation for books!
The final stage is gluing the book "guts" into the book cover; this is called Casing-In.

Nothing can excite a child more than experiencing something first-hand. Many of the classrooms that participate in the Student Book Project program will also come for a tour of our facility. The students get to see a book made from start to finish and all of the interesting processes it goes through. Once the group has visited us they are always quite eager to work on their books and produce school work that is worthy of being bound into a real book.
Tours are scheduled on a 'first-come, first-serve' basis. We only offer tours during a certain time period during the school year: late September through the end of April. Please call us for more details and availability.
